How to give your bird gym time

How to give your bird gym time

Starting with your companion parrots is an extraordinary pet parent experience. Even though most people know how to “go the extra mile” when caring for their everyday household pet, they can often be perplexed about how to truly make our homes a haven for their parrots. A big cage with plenty of toys and nutritious food is a start; but, where do they go from there? Your parrot wants to have fun, stretch its wings, and always be entertained. All these can be achieved when you provide a parrot play gym.

Furnishing your parrot with a play gym enables you to have a specified space for your parrot to explore, play with toys, or just stretch out its wings and exercise without being confined to its cage. Using a play gym every day gives your bird a little independence and has some other health benefits, like the reduction of stress from boredom or burning extra calories to curtail the risk of obesity.

Designing a gym for your parrot

in any shape and size to suit any type of parrot. Parrot gyms are commonly made from high-quality wood, like Java, durable plastic, or bird-safe metal.

To decide on the best stand for your parrot, you will also want to consider our pet's size, activity level, and age. Gyms can also be customized with the addition of your pet’s favourite types of toys.

You need to put into consideration the portion of space you would like to dedicate to your parrot’s play area. For a space of maximum portability, a tabletop gym or branch stand is an ideal option that would enable you to bring your parrot to any room in the house or put the gym away when not in use.  You could also pitch  in a bird ladder, bird bridge, and bird climber

Tabletop gyms furnished with ladders, swings, and other types of exercise toys are common for small parrots like parakeets and cockatiels, while stands for bigger birds generally have a thick wooden branch with a hook you can add a toy of your choice and a cup for treats or water.

If you are looking to get a more permanent and stationary option, hanging your parrot's play gyms could be whimsical and fun when placed just about anywhere with the right equipment. If you have a particularly adventurous bird, you may contemplate creating a free-standing java branch stand below a hanging gym for a floor-to-ceiling exploration experience. A hanging gym is great for fully flighted parrots and those parrots that consider climbing an extreme sport.

Just make sure that your hanging gyms are properly anchored in the ceiling to curtail the risk of damage or collapse, especially for big parrots like the macaw or cockatoo! For a mobile option, yet not quite raising the roof, free-standing parrot gyms come in many different styles that may consist of a single java branch, or an array of metal ladders, swings, and bridges. Any parrot play gym is sure to please when equipped with plenty of appropriate toys to shred, chunk, forage, and destroy!

Take it slow

should be kept busy with variety and excitement every day while your older birds are inclined to rely on predictability. Like we said earlier, consider your bird’s personality before changing its environment to make sure it adjusts properly and is not fearful of its new surroundings. Not all parrots will accept their new play gym at first. Introduce the idea slowly with plenty of praise and treats at a pace that makes sense for your parrot

Also, make sure your parrot stays safe while using its new play gym. Make sure you place the new gym where your parrot cannot easily access items that you don’t want to be chewed; this could be electrical wires, outlets, painted wood, curtains, wooden molding, ceiling tiles, ceiling fans, or any number of possibilities. Make sure ceiling fans are turned off and stay off while your bird is out of its cage.
