Parrotlet Personality, Food & Care

Parrotlets look very similar to little green parakeets, but they are not priced like parakeets and do not share the same personality as green parakeets. They are also a couple of inches smaller than parakeets by 5 inches in length.
The two well sought-after parrotlets are the Pacific parrotlet and the green-rumped parrotlet.
Pacific Parrotlets are repeatedly compared to Amazon parrots, a family of parrots that many believe to be their close cousins. They are not noisy birds hence they are great for people living in small apartments. They are also very high-spirited but can become aggressive if left for too long without handling.
The male Pacific Parrotlet is green with a blue streak behind the eye and blue on the rump while the female Pacific Parrotlet lacks the blue colouring but may or may not have a faint blue streak behind the eye.
One of the smallest in the group, the Green-Rumped Parrotlet is a little gentler than the Pacific parrotlet but would take a longer time to acclimate to new surroundings. For a parrotlet novice, this is the best choice.
Parrotlet Food
Parrotlets are known for their voracious appetites and thrive on a varied diet. Your parrotlets need a calcium source, such as cuttlebone. They should also be fed a pellet-based diet supplemented with fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as some seeds. Ensure you dice up their fruit so they can sink their tiny beaks into it.

Parrotlet Healthcare
Being handy little birds that rarely get diseases, they can live for up to 30 years but diseases like bacteria, viruses, and harmful fungi can make any bird susceptible to illness.
Other even rarer avian diseases can also affect parrotlets.
Regularly, ensure you create an out-of-cage and socialization time for your parrotlet. Doing this would prevent your parrot from feeling neglected or bored and inadvertently prevent it from feather plucking and even skin picking, which can become a severe health concern.

Parrotlet Toys
Parrotlet is very active parrots that need their play space and plenty of toys to keep them occupied. Parrot kabobs and other shreddable toys available here are parrotlet favourites. You should also provide them with swings and boings. For exercise, you can create foraging challenges that will test your bird's food hunting abilities as well.
Parrotlet Cages
Even though Parrotlets are characteristically small, getting a small cage for them is not allowed. Ensure you create a cage that is spacious for all their activities like sleeping, playing and eating. A spacious wide cage with 1/4 inch bar spacing is ideal.
To prevent accidents or injury, set boundaries in your parrotlet's cage and teach the bird to remain on a play stand. Ensure you diligently set the parrotlet back on its play stand and every time it gets off.
At Scarlette, there is a cage for every parrot. Shop here
