Here is a shortlist of three ways to know  a conure is right for you

STEP 1: Understand and adapt to your Conures Behaviour

  1. Do not keep a conure if you are not ready to make a long-term commitment. If you travel a lot or often change lifestyles, a conure may not be the right pet for you.
  2. Even though conures are known to have playful, clownish, and affectionate personalities, some of them may not want to be touched while others enjoy just sitting on their owner’s shoulders and cuddling up to their face.
  3. Even though conures do not talk like other types of parrots, they squawk a lot. If you do not like noise, a conure is not the right pet for you.
  4. If your conure is stressed, tired, afraid, or annoyed, it may nip you or people around you. While excessive nipping should not be tolerated, you may have to put up with a little nipping, especially while you are training your conure.

STEP 2: Help your Conure adapt to your home

  1. Before you bring your conure home, you have to soundproof your home by covering your windows and mirrors by covering them so your conure does not fly into them, put away valuables that you do not want to be chewed, remove long cords and drapes so they don't strangle your bird, and turn off fans when your bird is out.
  2. Ensure your Concur's cage is kept away from a window, to avoid too much sunlight.
  3. Do you work long hours or spend a lot of time away? The conure may not be the right pet bird for you.  You need to spend several hours a day keeping your concur company.
  4. Teach your kids how to properly carry or hold a conure. Please bear in mind that if your kids frighten or hurt the conure, it may nib them
  5. If anyone in your home has a weak immune system or is prone to airborne diseases, do not keep a conure. Conures could carry communicable infections that don't make them sick.

STEP 3: Choosing the right kind of Conure

With over 40 varieties of Conures, each variety has unique markings and different temperaments. Research different species of conure to find the right one for you.

Here are some species we find interesting;

  1. If you are looking for a conure showstopper that is very easy to find and purchase then the Sun Conure is for you.
  2. If you want a quiet green-cheeked friend, the Dusky Conure or the Green Cheeked Conure is your best option. Even though they are energetic, they would provide you with fun without the noise associated with bird fun.
  3. Nanday conures are birds that can adapt well to different environments.
  4. A mitred conure can learn human words more easily than other types of conures.
