Best ways to exercise your parrot

When you bring your parrot home, exercise should be an important part of your parrot's weekly routine. As it will not only stop your parrot from becoming overweight but also alleviate boredom and make it happier and less likely to be mischievous.

Helping your pet parrot to carry out some activities like walking, climbing, wing beating, and playing games would create some excitement in your bird's life and also help to create a stronger bond between you and your pet. In case you and your pet are new to pet exercise then start slowly and ensure you both enjoy those activities.

Before you start exercising your parrots;

  1. Make sure the parrot is in good health
  2. Talk to your vet about the proposed exercise plan before you start
  3. Make sure your parrot is being fed with a good all-round diet of a high-quality seed mix and make sure meals are supplemented with fresh fruit and vegetables

Before you begin any exercise, have a phrase or safe word that you can use to signal that you can begin. Examples of such words are “Are you ready"? or "Are you fine?”

Here are some exercises your parrots can do

Climbing:

Motivate your parrot to go up the stairs step by step. You can buy rope ladders from your local pet shop that attach to the ceiling to replicate this movement if you don’t have any stairs. This will help build strong legs and feet. You could also provide your parrot with PLAY STANDS & GYMS and Bird-parrot-swings.

Beating Its Wings

You can do this by positioning your parrot on your arm and also securing its feet with your hand. In case you or your parrot is new to this form of exercise, move your hand slowly upwards and downwards and motivate your pet to flap its wings.

Move in a circle at the same time to make the exercise more stimulating.

Going on a Walk

Do this by putting your parrot on your shoulder while you walk around the house and do some housework. You can do this and chat with them at the same time. This will increase the bond between you and your parrot and you could even burn a few extra calories.

Dancing

Dancing is a very enjoyable exercise. Do this by sitting your parrot down on a sofa, chair or table, put some music on and start dancing in front of it. Don’t worry about looking silly! Most parrots will join in quickly and find this highly entertaining and engaging.

Toys

Get your pet's cage stocked with a wide variety of toys for your parrot to play with, both in and outside of the cage. Even though many household objects, such as plain undyed paper, feathers, ice lolly sticks and wooden sewing spools make great toys, ensure they are not dangerous. Check on all toys daily and replace any that are becoming worn.

In conclusion, make sure your parrot exercises regularly and find an avian veterinarian to take care of your parrot. Make sure that your vet gives your pet a good physical exam before you start any exercise program. Carrying out blood work, a fecal exam, and tests that your vet recommends are a good place to start.

If your parrot is aggressive, try providing an outlet for its natural energy as this will make it a better part of the family. Parrots spend a lot of their day sleeping, but since wild parrots have so many things to do as part of their daily routine, birds that are not exercised become bored and misbehave.

Finally, your parrot's diet is everything. Only feed it meals recommended by your vet.
