How to Make a Budgie Live Longer

How to Make a Budgie Live Longer

Budgies are healthy and energetic birds. They hit the genetic jackpot by evolving into the parakeet species with the longest lifespan. Notwithstanding, many budgies die as young as two to five years old. This happens so often that this has made many people think budgies have naturally short lives. Sadly, this is not normal. When given excellent care, a budgie can live between eight and fifteen years.

Budgies like having their own space and appreciate routine and mild days. A great environment for a pet parakeet is a large cage, semi-covered at night for comfort and darkness. The cage should not be placed in a draft or a room that is too extreme in temperature. If owners need to place a cage outside for a little while, this should happen under supervision. Budgies can also overheat if placed directly in the sun for too long.

Causes of stress for Budgies includes;

  1. Loud noise in their environment like kids yelling, people screaming, or animals making noise.
  2. When they are placed in a part of the house where  there is a lot of heavy foot traffic
  3. Pungent smells like chemicals, cigarette smoke, even perfume or cooking.
  4. Getting them locked up in a small cage
  5. Quick movements from the owner while taking care of the cage

Budgie Food

Inadequate diet is a crucial cause of early deaths among budgies. A seeds-only diet for your budgie cannot provide the energy and nutrition it may need. The seeds you select to feed your pet should also be high quality and preferably not the cheap, supermarket stuff that smells dusty when you open the box. They also need plenty of greens and fruits. Consider apple, carrot, parsley, spinach and pumpkin.

Budgie Toys

A budgie left with no stimulation, physical activities can weaken and create a lower resistance to infections and most probably, a shortened lifespan hence, the need to provide toys that would help them exercise.

Wooden or plastic toys are the best chance for budgies when it comes to toy materials, although wood often offers more options for chewing and pecking. Rope and ladder toys which are alternatively made out of cotton or sisal are also great. However, be sure to never use ropes constructed from nylon as they can result in injury.

Deciding to take care of a hurt or sick budgie at home can have very, disastrous consequences. Unless you are an experienced handler, ensure you do not always treat pet injuries in your home. Certain infections and diseases can be treated without a professional, but to be on the safer side; nothing beats a  vet's input.
