My Parrot Laid Eggs

When you purchase a female bird, it is expected she lays an egg now and then. However, this doesn't necessarily suggest that you're to be expectant of a baby bird or that the egg will hatch. If your parrot has not been intimate with a male bird before the egg or eggs were laid, the egg will not be productive.

Egg-laying can be complicated. Therefore if you would prefer your Parrot to be a companion bird and not a breeder, Make sure you avoid doing things that lead to reproductive behaviours.

Parrots take a few days to lay a full clutch of eggs. This clutch may contain as many as three to four eggs. They also show strong aggressive behaviour when they have eggs.

What do you do if your parrot lays an egg and you have no intention of adding more parrots to the household?

When your Parrot lays an egg, leave it alone for a few days. Observe your bird see if she shows any interest in the egg. She may have ignored it at first.

Leaving your parrot's egg alone for a period gives it time to lay more if she is going to. During this period, you have to wait and see if she decides to sit on them. Most Parrots will completely dismiss the eggs as time passes. If this happens, go ahead and remove the eggs and throw them away.

Nonetheless, if your parrot shows interest in the eggs, you will have to try another method. Wait for the period when your Parrot is not sitting on or near her eggs. Extract the eggs and shake them vigorously.

Doing this will prevent the eggs from hatching if they are fertile.

It is important to note that If you take away any eggs your parrot lays when it's aware,  it will just trigger them to lay more.

What do you do if your parrot lays an egg and you look forward to adding more Parrots to the household?

During this time, your Parrot may stay very close to her eggs most of the time. She may infrequently eat and poop and when she does poop, it is usually in large amounts and sometimes smelly (from holding it for long periods.)

It is important to note that Parrots pull calcium from different parts of the body while laying eggs. Too much egg laying can induce your Parrot to be calcium deficient which can be life-threatening for your bird.

Parrots do require a nest for three main reasons; privacy, resting and breeding. Your pet parrot will not build its nests so you will need to provide it with a nest. If you want to breed parrots, you will need to get a specific nesting box where they can lay and protect their eggs.
