A quick guide to owning parrots this new year

Now that you have decided to get a fine-feathered friend. You would want to know if you are doing right by the bird you already have by ensuring you have the right essentials for the health and happiness of your little noisemaker.  Caring for a bird simply requires more than just a cage and the toss of a few bread crumbs.

Birds are fragile creatures, and you need to care for them just as you would a baby. Fortunately, it is pretty easy to care for a bird properly. Here are the items you need for that, and why you need them.

Comfortable Cage

Your parrot's cage should be made of a non-toxic, tough material that is not only very easy to clean but does not have any sharp protrusion that could wound your bird. Make sure the cage is wide enough for your bird to fully broaden its wings with comfort and high enough to accommodate its long tails.

The main point here is that you have to make sure your birdcage is big enough.

We also recommend that you get two cages for your bird; a normal cage where it can spend most of its days and a smaller one that would come in handy for travelling or trips to the vet.

For your pet's cage, cage liner paper, newspaper, or paper towels will do just fine. This is perfect because it is easy to clean out and it would help you monitor your bird's droppings for health problems.

Parrot Perch

A perch is very important for your parrot's comfort. Make sure your parrot's perch is wide enough so that its toes do not coincide around it. You can purchase a bird perch from our pet store here or you can make one yourself by attaching two branches on either side of its cage with a small bracket or an uncoated wire.

Nonetheless, bird owners need to make sure that the wood they use for this is chemical-free and not toxic.

As a pet owner, make sure you put your parrot's perch away from its food and water bowls to dissuade them from eating or drinking too much.

Food

Bird food is usually in the form of pellets. This type of food can be gotten here. You can also feed your bird some fresh or dried fruits and vegetables, nuts, beans, and cooked brown rice.

Ensure your parrot is not given food like onions, garlic, avocado, chocolate, or alcohol since these foods are extremely toxic for birds.

Regards your bird's bowl, a ceramic or metal bowl would be the perfect dish for your parrot. Make sure that it is wide, rather than deep to enable your bird to try out new food items.

Make sure you clean out your parrot's bowls every day because parrots are very fragile and you just won't want anything happening to your parrot as a result of something it ate or drank.

Toys

Your pet should have something to play with. Reasonable bird toys could be pine cones, Natural Toy Range, Wood & Rope Toys, rawhide, and soft white pine. This would help to protect the beak healthy and will keep your parrot energetic and active. Woods such as redwood, cedar, or balsa wood are dangerous for bird health.

Cleaning Products And Accessories

Soft dish soaps can be utilized in cleaning the food and water dish while plain white vinegar diluted with water could be a great multi-purpose cleaner for your parrot's cage and toy. If you are dealing with a tough mess on rugs or furniture, an enzyme cleaner in a spray bottle could do the trick. A bottle brush and plain towels are the only cleaning items that are needed to clean out the cage.

We hope you found this useful.
